The Fields Millennium Green TrustFields Millennium Green
The Fields Millennium Green Trust was established in 2001 in order to look after the site which was created from an area of derelict farmland in response to a campaign by local residents. In the last six years the Millennium Green Trust has worked closely with the 3-Estates Community organizations, Groundwork Birmingham and Solihull, and local volunteers in maintaining the open space for the benefit of local people. We have planted bulbs, organized ‘clean-up’ days, held a dog-show, Medieval Days, and a Craft Fair We have installed two gates in order to make the Millennium Green more accessible to disabled people. We are soon to have our own Nature Trail. Our future plans are to form a Friends Group and to continue to make improvements to our Millennium Green. What is it?A large space which was at one time three fields belonging to Lilycroft Farm. In 2000, local residents worked for the site to acquire Village Green status, and then a Millennium Green. It has been partly landscaped with paths, various plantings including hazel coppices, native tree areas, an orchard and a wildflower meadow. A Survey carried out by the Birmingham and Black Country Wildlife Trust revealed a rich diversity of species of plants, as well as birds and butterflies and the mature oak trees which are a feature of the site also support bird and insect populations. Bird and bat boxes have been put up and it is hoped that these will attract even more wildlife. The natural features are also enhanced by a large Flower Sculpture, the feature created to mark the Millennium, and a focal point of the site from which excellent views of Kings Norton can be obtained! The Millennium Green welcomes people from all areas, and is open at all times. Dog walkers are provided with bins for waste. There are steps in places, but there are level paths extending in two directions from the disabled carpark. Disabled visitor wishing to gain access through the carpark should however first contact Maggie Sweet on 0121 628 1247 as The gate had had to be kept locked to prevent theft and vandalism. Events are held annually on the events field, which is also used for informal games by children. The events have included a Dog Show, an Arts festival, and two Medieval Days. Community work days have been held on which litter is collected, bulbs have been planted, paths weeded and trees pruned. Location: Off Longdales Road, opposite the new Kings Norton Cemetery. Access: By foot via entrances from Longdales Road, Gildas Avenue, Sisefield Road and Primrose Hill. There is only a small disabled carpark off Longdales Road, otherwise visitors arriving by car have to park on verges or on Primrose Hill. Future events will be publicised on the BOSF website.
