Balaam's Wood

Bluebells in Balaam’s WoodBalaam’s Wood is a semi natural ancient woodland on the edge of Frankley, next to the Birmingham Great Park. Just 6.5 acres in size, the woodland is mostly oak with an under storey of hazel; its beauty and diversity are enhanced by the River Rea which meanders through on its way to join the River Tame.

The habitat is varied by an adjoining area of grassland and the balancing lake on the Great Park, a short walk away. The Rea Valley Cycle Route uses the existing pathway, which makes it an ideal place to visit. The pathways are also quite flat giving some access to the less able.

The Friends of Balaam’s Wood was set up in 1998, by a group of local residents. They saw Balaam’s Wood suffering from neglect; including flytipping and wanted to improve this wonderful woodland.

As a group, we undertake clean ups; help with flora and fauna surveys; do practical conservation work and hold various events; all supported by the Northfield District Ranger.

The next challenge for Balaam’s Wood is to achieve Local Nature Reserve status for the site, protecting it for future generations.
