Cotteridge Park

The first blossom in the new Community OrchardCotteridge Park is a good example of local, neighbourhood, Victorian Park. We are in South West Birmingham not far from the Cadbury factory and Bournville Station. The park has a mixture of landscapes:- open fields, wooded areas and a stream. The park is quite hilly in places.

The park has a children’s play area, a skateboard park, 2 very dilapidated tennis courts and a basketball court. We are very lucky to have a dedicated, on-site park worker who keeps the park secure and looking very good.

The Friends of Cotteridge Park was set up in 1997 as a result of a successful local campaign to stop cuts to the park’s budget. The campaign brought together lots of park users who had never met before - so we decided to stay together to work to improve the park and develop it as a resource for the local community.

Over the last 10 years we have planted trees and bulbs, run play schemes and sports coaching, set up a toy library, organized an annual community arts festival, campaigned for the skateboard park and better paths. In 2000 we planted 1,500 trees for a Millennium Wood and 2 years ago we raised £7k to purchased some land next to the park to turn into the Cotteridge Community Orchard - this is a project to get local people and schools involved in growing, cooking and eating local food.

Our next challenge is to get the tennis and basketball courts refurbished and to keep the group going for our next 10 years.
