Reclaim The Beds
Reclaim the Beds Design Competition
Birmingham Open Spaces Forum and Birmingham City Council have decided to try a new approach to the planting of shrub and rose beds in the city's parks.
We all know that rose beds, in particular, have suffered over many decades from financial constraints, skill shortages and changes in climate and lifestyles.
Instead of struggling on with a few straggling plants or grassing the beds over we are issuing you with a challenge to design a sustainable, environmentally appropriate bed suitable for the 21st century park.
The competition winner will receive a voucher for £500 of plants from Akamba Nurseries and see their design planted in beds across the city's parks. Click here for the link to the competition details and rules.
The competition winner will be anounced in the new year at which point the challenge will be extended to the city's residents to adopt the beds in their local parks.
BOSF and BCC will provide volunteers with the planting design, a shopping list of plants and tools, training in the planting and pruning skills needed and advice on fundraising to buy the plants.
Get in touch if you want to have a go at designing the bed or if you think the beds in your local park could do with a facelift.
By joining BOSF you will have the opportunity to make contact with other groups and individuals interested in open spaces in Birmingham You will be kept informed of events and activities that may be of interest to you. You will be able to tap into the network to get answers to problems that other groups have already solved. |

Launch of the OPAL Air Survey
The OPAL national Air Survey is launched on 29/9/09. This survey uses nine types of tree lichen and Sycamore Tar Spot as bioindicators of local air pollution levels. If you are interested in doing a survey, or would like to host a survey in your local green space, then please contact Adam at team@opalwestmidlands.org. All you need are some tree lichens and/or some Sycamore trees; this survey does not require access to woodland as lichens prefer sunny conditions found on the woodland edge, or on stand-alone trees. |
