Local Parks & Green Spaces As Action Centres For Climate Change
As we look at local change brought about through climate change our local parks and green spaces can serve as action centres for our local planet – and show the part played by plants, wildlife and people in a local Biodiversity Action Plan.
Birmingham Trees for Life
On Friday 27th October at 3.15pm the first apple trees will be planted at Cotteridge Community Orchard. The day marks the beginning of the final stage in the transformation of a rough patch of neglected land adjacent to Cotteridge Park into a real orchard for local people to enjoy. The event will also be Birmingham’s first ever ‘Apple Day’.
Muntz Park's Play Area Opening
We celebrated the park's anniversary again this year with a Birthday Picnic on Friday 19th May 2006. We will also be opened the new play area on this day with a visit from the Deputy Lord Mayor of Birmingham and live music.
Bats in Birmingham
Count Bat is a series of open days to tell people about all things ‘batlike and involves fun activities for the kids (and adults), such as arts and crafts, bat games and lots more – including a live bat so you can get a close up look at what they’re really like.
Raddlebarn Primary School's Centenary Gates
It was Raddlebarn Primary School's Centenary year in 2005 and they had an ornamental gate installed on the 18th October 2005 for the children to access Muntz Park more safely. Part of the construction took place in the play ground and some of the pupils designed and made the pictures within the panels themselves.

New Flower Meadow - Daisy Farm Park
Our Friends group started, like many other groups I suspect, as a response to the poor state of the park. Maintenance seemed reduced to basic grass cutting and occasional litter picking. Vandalism had started to take a hold and worst of all joyriding and burnt-out cars were becoming an increasingly common sight.
Plant For Life - Urban Code
In place of countryside rules about fastening gates, keeping dogs under control and guarding against risk of fire, the PlantforLife ‘Urban Code’ tackles the scourges of city living - littering and plant vandalism. PlantforLife hopes to encourage Local Authorities to consider implementation of its ‘Urban Code’ at a local level.
After the Tornado - Balsall Heath Park
Balsall Heath Park was devastated by a tornado on 28 July 2005, with not a tree left intact. Friends of Balsall Heath Park is lobbying for this disaster to be seen as an opportunity to remake the park, as it cannot be put back together as it was. They want a budget agreed by BCC, and a landscape designer appointed to instigate a community-based process to create a new park based on residents' needs.
Parks Need Park Force
A report on the people who work in our urban parks and green spaces written by CABE Space. CABE Space wants to see on site staff – a new multi-skilled 'Parkforce' - dedicated to caring for every significant urban park in England during daylight hours. Parkies, park keepers, park rangers, park wardens - whatever the job title, people in our parks make all the difference.
Blooming Soho
Soho Pool Park, in Hockley is the site for a trial of an experimental method of creating brightly coloured, cost-effective floral displays by the Soho Green-up Project. A riot of reds, pinks, oranges and blues currently brighten up the entrance to the park.
