Insurance
BTCV can now insure ‘Friends of’ and other Community Groups.

Lots of open spaces’ user groups in Birmingham struggle to get suitable insurance for their activities. And this limits what they are able to do.

Many groups join the British Trust for Conservation Volunteers to gain access to BTCV’s insurance policy, underwritten by Zurich. Most of these groups are engaged in some kind of ‘hands-on’ practical activity such as a community clean-up or creating a school nature garden.

However, there are also groups working to improve the quality of life within their community who don’t actually do any physical environmental work. They may instead hold meetings, organise open days, or plan other types of community events. BTCV now offers an insurance policy to suit such groups.

BTCV can offer Public Liability, Personal Accident and Employer’s Liability Insurance. Their policies can cover ordinary members, committee members, directors, staff and volunteers. Premiums (including membership) start from £146 for Public Liability with a £5 Million indemnity limit. For further information or for a quote, please call the BTCV Community Unit on 01302 388842 or log on to www.btcv.org/network.

Insurance Services for the voluntary sector
Despite a growth in specialist sector services in insurance, it must be said that the voluntary sector is wide with very diverse needs. An insurance broker who knows a lot about one aspect, for example large scale residential care, won't necessarily understand the requirements of a small advice agency. So ask to see their client list, and check out what similar organisations have insurance for, as well as recommended brokers or insurance companies.

BBC Action Network
Do you want to let people know about a project that you care about? Maybe BBC Action Network can help. It's an open website that aims to get people involved in local issues. Share your ideas on a local noticeboard, or publicise an event. Add your group or organisation to the site and write a short article about what you are doing. Make contact with new people who share your ideas and may even offer help.

David Gosling - Land / Environment Artist
Environmental artist David Gosling uses a variety of materials to create art/sculptures in the landscape, in both contemporary and traditional form. From a weaving background, his work developed into weaving into the landscape which is still evident in much of his work, including the more permanent pieces. He is available for commisions, residencies, youth projects and workshops.
