Resources - Planning Issues

Planning Aid
Planning Aid provides free, independent and professional advice and support on town and country planning matters to disadvantaged community groups and individuals who cannot afford to pay fees to a planning consultant. It complements the work of local authorities, but is wholly independent of them. Site hosted by the Royal Town Planning Institiute.

CABE Space
CABE Space aims to bring excellence to the design, management and maintenance of parks and public space in our towns and cities. CABE education exists to ensure that young people understand the value of well designed buildings and spaces. Our ultimate ambition is to nurture a generation of confident and demanding citizens, to play an active role in improving the villages, towns and cities that we live in. We were established by CABE, Commission for Architecture & the Built Environment in 2002.

Community Planning
This website provides an overview of these new methods of community planning. It is aimed at everyone concerned with the built environment. Jargon is avoided and material is presented in a universally applicable, how-to-do-it style. Whether you are a resident wanting to improve the place where you live, a policy maker interested in improving general practice, or a development professional working on a specific project, you should quickly be able to find what you need.

Office of the Deputy Prime Minister
ODPM was created as a central department in its own right in May 2002. It is responsible for policy on housing, planning, devolution, regional and local government and the fire service. It also takes responsibility for the Social Exclusion Unit, the Neighbourhood Renewal Unit and the Government Offices for the Regions.

Info 4 Local Government
info4local provides local authorities with quick and easy access to information from more than 50 government departments, agencies and public bodies. It is run by a group of six departments, with the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister in the lead.

Planning Kit Bag
These web-pages give practical help and useful information to secure new and improved sport and recreation facilities through the Sport England’s Planning Contributions Kitbag.

Best Practice

Creative Spaces
A toolkit for participatory urban design.

HomeZones
Home Zones are an attempt to strike a balance between vehicular traffic and everyone else who uses the street, the pedestrians, cyclists, business people and residents.

New Life for Main Roads
Transport 2000's Revitalising Communities on Main Roads project. Main roads are often noisy, polluted places, dominated by cars and dangerous for people on foot. But main roads are also the places we use to get to the shops, catch the bus, walk to the local park or visit the doctor. Most people use main roads every day to get to work or to walk to school. We need new life for our main roads!
